11 November 2010Losses caused by natural disasters across the world could triple to $185 billion annually by the end of this century, even without taking into account the impact of climate change, according to the findings of a joint study by the United Nations and the World Bank unveiled today. The consequences of climate change could lead to more losses with tropical cyclones alone causing damages worth between $28 billion and $68 billion, says the report, “Natural Hazards, UnNatural Disasters: The Economics of Effective Prevention,” which was released in Washington. The number of people exposed to storms and earthquakes in large cities could double to 1.5 billion by 2050, according to the report, which was prepared by the UN International Strategy for Disaster Reduction (UNISDR) and the World Bank. The 250-page report outlines a number of simple measures to prevent death and destruction from natural hazards, such as earthquakes, hurricanes, and flooding.Governments can, for example, make information about hazards and risks easily accessible, while providing land titles reduces the possibility of eviction or demolition, and encourages individuals to invest in safer structures.Removing rent controls can restore incentives for landlords to maintain buildings, the report says, adding that refocusing existing public spending to prioritize day-to-day operations and maintenance, including repairing roads, painting steel bridges and keeping drains clear, would prevent damage.“This report presents necessary evidence and a compelling case for our client countries to reduce their vulnerability to natural hazards so that they can develop in a sustainable and cost-effective way,” said the World Bank Group President, Robert B. Zoellick. “We, and our partners in the Global Facility for Disaster Reduction and Recovery (GFDRR), stand ready to scale up efforts to assist disaster-prone developing countries in addressing this threat to the safety and livelihoods of poor people.”The report stresses that it is the vulnerable, not the rich, who bear the brunt of natural hazards, whose effects are often compounded by distorted policies. It notes that there were 3.3 million deaths from natural hazards in the 40 years to 2010. Almost one million people died in Africa’s droughts alone.“This timely report arrives when so many disasters have already happened this year and affected millions of people in Haiti, Pakistan, China, Viet Nam, Indonesia and elsewhere,” said Margareta Wahlström, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction.“We hope that the report will help governments better understand the added value of disaster risk reduction policies so that they can invest more in prevention and protect more people and their assets in the future,” she added.Damage caused by natural hazards is particularly high in middle-income countries, the report notes. Poor and middle-income countries suffered the most, but the report emphasizes that “geography is not destiny” and calls for more spending on early warning systems, particularly weather forecasting.“Warning people of impending hazards saves lives and livelihoods,” said Michel Jarraud, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) Secretary-General. “The report clearly shows that more can be done to take full advantage of many technological advances in predicting weather through investing in hydro-meteorological services.“The most vulnerable countries in particular require strengthening of their observing networks and infrastructure to establish effective early warning systems to warn their populations against disasters,” he added. read more

The ongoing United States military drawdown in Iraq is making it more difficult for the United Nations to carry out its operations, which range from the humanitarian to the development to the political fields, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in his latest report on the country.“While there has been gradual progress over the past several years in making the United Nations more self-reliant in Iraq, certain security and logistical arrangements still being provided by the United States will need to be replaced,” he writes in the report, in which he also cites continuing though lower-level violence and the need to build swiftly on gains in the political field to provide essential services to the Iraqi people.“While steps are being taken in this [security] regard, this will only be possible with strong financial support from Member States,” he says, adding that overall the withdrawal of US forces is likely to have a short- to medium-term effect on the security situation as the central Government attempts to assert itself.Mr. Ban commends all political blocs for reaching agreements that appear to have ended the deadlock in forming a new government after elections in March. “The breakthrough represents a major milestone in democratic progress for Iraq and should pave the way for the first peaceful transition between elected governments under full Iraqi sovereignty,” he says.He urges leaders to swiftly complete forming the new government and ensure that it is inclusive and broadly participatory, adding: “Progress in this regard will help put the country on the path towards democracy, national reconciliation and long-term stability.”He calls for a new impetus to resolve the many political, socio-economic and security challenges, including disputed internal boundaries, particularly the status of Kirkuk, the sharing of natural resources, a revenue-sharing mechanism, hydrocarbon legislation, agreement on the balance between federal, regional, and provincial powers, and respect for human rights.“In consultation with the new Government of Iraq, UNAMI will continue to support efforts to resolve these outstanding issues,” he says, referring to the UN Assistance Mission in Iraq.He calls the recently increasing number of security attacks “a major concern,” voicing particular shock at the attack on the Catholic Church of Our Lady of Salvation in Baghdad, which left many dead and scores injured. “It underscores the fact that Christians and minorities in the country continue to face daily threats of violence and intimidation,” he writes, also condemning the “heinous” attacks on Shia pilgrims in Karbala and Najaf.“I urge the Government of Iraq to bring the perpetrators to justice and ensure that all Iraqis, regardless of their religious beliefs, are provided with adequate protection and are able to practice their faith in peace,” he adds. Turning to development and reconstruction needs, he pledges continued UN support. “The formation of a new government will mean very little to ordinary Iraqis unless they begin to see tangible improvements in their lives, particularly in the delivery of essential services and the creation of new job opportunities,” he warns. While the focus in Iraq is shifting to long-term development, there are still many humanitarian needs, particularly with respect to internally displaced persons and refugees, Mr. Ban writes, warning that no significant new contributions have been received for the Iraq Humanitarian Action Plan. “While thanking the donor community and the Government of Iraq for the support received to date, I reiterate my request for increased resources to allow the United Nations and its partners to continue their support of the vulnerable populations of Iraq,” he declares. On human rights, Mr. Ban notes that the security situation continues to affect civilians, mostly through insurgent and extremist terrorism and violent gang crimes. UNAMI has observed some improvement in detention conditions in Kurdistan, including better living conditions and access to medical services in the facilities. Non-governmental organizations (NGOs), the report points out, have alleged that Iraqi domestic law and international human rights standards are being systematically violated, citing allegations of torture, ill-treatment and rape of detainees to extract confessions in both State and non-State illegal detention centres. Turning to UNAMI’s role in the country, the Secretary-General cites its facilitation of dialogue between the Arab and Kurdish sides in the north, its continued engagement with the major parliamentary blocs on the status of the constitutional review process in the forthcoming legislative session, and its focus, together with other UN agencies, on key national development initiatives, including in the private sector and employment generation. “It is my sincere hope that with the formation of a new government, the security situation in the country will improve,” he concludes. “However, Iraq will still remain a challenging operating environment in the foreseeable future.” 1 December 2010The ongoing United States military drawdown in Iraq is making it more difficult for the United Nations to carry out its operations, which range from the humanitarian to the development to the political fields, Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon says in his latest report on the country. read more

“Last year in Colombo, I met newly elected mayors from across the country, including the mayor of Jaffna from the Tamil north. Their plea was for help to build democratic structures and provide essential services in what is still very much a post-conflict situation. This can best be done at the community level, through local government and civil society,” he said. He says the Commonwealth Local Government Forum, working with the Commonwealth Secretariat and partners in Sri Lanka, is initiating a grass roots programme to do just that, and to assist in the healing of the deep wounds of decades of war. Just days after the Commonwealth Secretariat had backed holding the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) in Sri Lanka,  the Commonwealth Local Government Forum said Sri Lanak needs to be supported in it’s post war journey. In a letter published in the London Financial Times, Carl Wright, Secretary General, Commonwealth Local Government Forum said that Sri Lanka and its democracy need active support as well as constructive criticism in the long journey out of civil war. “In this, we will draw on the experiences of Commonwealth countries that have undergone the same painful and often difficult transition to peace: there is much that the Commonwealth can do to encourage adherence to democratic principles and good practices,” he added.Wright says while it is right to highlight human rights problems it is wrong in saying that the Commonwealth will be discredited by engagement and that the solution is to boycott Sri Lanka. Victims must have their day in court“I am ready to engage in dialogue with the authorities in Sudan to ensure that the Darfur suspects face independent and impartial justice, either in a courtroom in The Hague, or in Sudan”, said the Prosecutor. “Continued impunity is not an option. The victims of the Darfur situation deserve to finally have their day in court.”“My expectation is that Sudan, with the support of this Council, will engage in dialogue with my Office to discuss the feasibility of a mission by my Office to Sudan in the very near future to resolve these issues.” She said in the face of a resurgence of further alleged grave crimes by former ‘Janjaweed’ militia fighters who are now part of the TMC-sanctioned Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who led many of the alleged atrocities in Darfur over a decade ago, it was “simply intolerable” that reported attacks today were continuing. Attacks against civilian populations in Darfur have continued during the reporting period and appear to be increasing in severity. The approximately 1.64 million internally displaced persons in Darfur remain especially vulnerable and sexual and gender-based violence continues to restrict the freedom of movement of women and girls, in IDP camps and areas of return”, she told the Council Ms. Bensouda noted with concern “the reports that the RSF have allegedly seized facilities and assets previously held by the Africa Union-United Nations Hybrid Operation in Darfur. In this context, I support the AU Peace and Security Council’s resolve to extend UNAMID’s mandate for a period of 12 months…as well as its rejection of the TMC’s call for UNAMID to hand over assets to the RSF, and its request that these assets are handed to civilian authorities.” She said she would not hesitate to investigate any further crimes within the ICC mandate in Darfur “and where appropriate, prosecute”.  “With this Council’s support, and the cooperation of the authorities in Sudan”, she concluded, “there is an opportunity, now, to make real progress in the pursuit of accountability and justice for the victims in the Darfur situation. The current reported violence against civilians in Darfur must stop and all the ICC Darfur suspects must stand trial. We must not squander this opportunity.” That is according to the Prosecutor of the International Criminal Court (ICC), Fatou Bensouda, who said she had a “clear message to convey: now is the time to act. Now is the time for the people of Sudan to choose law, over impunity, and ensure that the ICC suspects in the Darfur situation, finally face justice in a court of law.” She said the Council now had a “unique opportunity to decisively and effectively” address the wrongs committed by the security forces aligned with former President Omar al-Bashir in the Darfur region between 2003-2008, when around 300,000 were killed and 2.7 million civilians driven from their homes, according to UN figures.  She called for the immediate cessation of violence against civilians in the capital Khartoum and elsewhere, since the 3 June wave of attacks against protesters calling for a return to civilian rule, in opposition to the ruling Transitional Military Council (TMC).  All arrest warrants for the five suspects charged with the grave crimes within the ICC’s remit – genocide, war crimes and crimes against humanity – remain outstanding, she told members. Both deposed president Bashir, and two others, are now said to be in custody she said and are legally obliged to be transferred by the TMC. Only if they could show willing to prosecute them for the same crimes, could they remain in Sudan, she said.  read more

THW Kiel is the first finalist of the VELUX EHF FINAL4, defeating Hungarian top-flight 29:26 (13:13). The match between the debutant and a two-time champion was way more than that, looking at the team sheets. In the experienced MKB-MVM Veszprem side it was Ilić facing his former team, and a place of his greatest success, with a lot to prove. The Zebras are a team that had never lost a final in Cologne lifting the trophy on two occasions in 2010 and 2012. THW Kiel will now be playing their seventh EHF Champions League final (second in Cologne), facing a wonderful prospect of lifting the sought-after trophy fourth time in their history. The Serbian shoot-outVeszprem star Momir Ilić went from strength to strength against his former team, orchestrating his team’s offensive and defensive actions; while scoring 5 goals to climb atop the VELUX EHF Champions League scoring chart with staggering 96 goals. Serbian sharpshooter will have to console with a chance of winning the top scorer’s trophy, albeit missing out on the main prize- the VELUX EHF FINAl4 trophy he had proudly lifted back in 2012. Another Serbian top-talent, Marko Vujin didn’t have the best of games scoring only two goals; but a textbook shooting performance from another THW Kiel starlet left the fans purring in sold-out LANXESS Arena- Aron Palmarson scored seven goals, as the Icelandic left back was ruthless in decisive moments of the match. In an equally contested first half, which ended 13:13, the two excellent goalkeepers took the stage. Andreas Palicka turned put out his A-game today for THW Kiel, collecting 12 saves. On the other side it was Mirko Alilović’s heroics in goal that made the world of difference for MKB-MVM Veszpremup until the very end. The Croat looked unbeatable at times, but his efforts often failed to capitalize in the attack due to technical errors committed by the Hungarian side.“We played a great first half-time, but the rest of the game we played in a hurry and that kind of broke us down.“We knew we should be more careful of their fast-breaks, if we let that happen, it solves the game. And that’s what happened. They played “smarter”, waiting for us to make mistakes and beat us like that”, said the Croatian goalkeeper. It’s about who wants it the mostTHW Kiel didn’t revel in misfortune of last season’s failure (finishing 4th after loosing both matches), as the Zebras show the importance of depth and tactical discipline to upstage MKB-MVM Veszprem, who held their own until very late in the match. The match wore-out even the toughest admitted by one of the heroes of the game, THW Kiel goalkeeper Andreas Palicka.“We will do everything to have our bodies 100% ready for tomorrow.“Our physiotherapists will have a lot of work tonight. The match saw Veszprem line-player Renato Sulić face the ignominy of a red card, for what was perceived to be a deliberate elbow in the face of Partick Wiencek.“I just noticed that he comes elbow first. After that I was gone for a moment, it wasn’t that bad but he struck me fully. And I don’t think that was coincidence,” said Wiencek about the incident. It took 56 minutes for the Bundesliga powerhouse to finally break the hard fighting MKB-MVM Veszprem. It was the exhaustion suffered by the key players- Nagy and Ilić that kicked in late in the match. The hard-working backs looked short of breath in the end to put Kiel’s defence to the sword in the dying minutes.“It’s not an excuse, but it seems like we didn’t have enough strength to keep up the first halftime”, said Ilić.“In defence we were strong, but didn’t play smart, we lost a lot of balls, and when you play like that against Kiel, it always ends bad”“You could see that we didn’t have a real match for three weeks, our reactions in defence were way too slow”, stated the competition top-scorer, of his concerns over his team’s performance. The Hungarian champions will now face the Spanish giants FC Barcelona in the 3rd placement match, while the winner on the 2014 VELUX EHF FINAL4 will be decided in a north-German derby between THW Kiel and SG Flensburg.TEXT: NEMANJA SAVIC ← Previous Story HC Alpla Hard defend Austrian title! first_imgThis much can be said for Boy Wonder. With the Masters just more than a month away, McIlroy has played only 80 holes this year. He missed the cut in the Abu Dhabi Golf Championship with rounds of 75-75. After a four-week break, he was eliminated in the first round of the Match Play Championship after a sloppy performance against Shane Lowry. And after opening with a 70 that gave no cause of alarm on Thursday, he was done eight holes later.“His demeanour looks a little different,” said Graeme McDowell, one of his best friends. “I felt like he was a little off with his golf swing on the range. There were a few moans and groans coming from the bay next to me. It’s normally a display. It’s normally a clinic. It’s superlatives coming from the coach and the caddie. That’s the sign of a guy who’s lacking a little technique in his swing and a little belief in his game.”McIlroy is still scheduled to play next week at Doral, and he could have some explaining to do.Bad play is one thing. The question was whether McIlroy showed bad manners by leaving early, and while one person truly understands the level of pain or discomfort, it was enough to raise questions by his peers.“I’m a great fan of Rory’s, but I don’t think that was the right thing to do,” Els said. News travels fast these days, except to Luke Guthrie. The PGA Tour rookie with a load talent is too young to worry about anything about his own golf, and he was thrilled with a 7-under 63 to take a one-shot lead over Michael Thompson going into the weekend. He didn’t find out about McIlroy until he walked through the doors of a ball room for an interview.Woods had his own concerns, too. He rallied from a double bogey on his back nine to scratch out another 70 and make the cut on the number. He went into the weekend nine shots out of the lead.Among those within three shots of the lead were Geoff Ogilvy, Lee Westwood, Charles Howell III, Sean O’Hair and Justin Rose — just about everyone, it seemed, except McIlroy. The Sunday Papers: Here’s some of the week’s best sportswriting>Lance in Dodgeball and 9 more of our favourite big screen cameos> “I didn’t notice anything,” Wilson said. “He wasn’t playing the way the world Number 1 plays normally. Didn’t hit the ball where he wanted to, and he’s a true gentleman, though. He … wasn’t treating Ernie and myself in a different way. He was upset with his golf and I guess he had enough for the week.”McIlroy, coming off a year in which he won a second major with a record, already set himself up for scrutiny when he left Titleist to sign an equipment deal with Nike that was said to be worth upward of $20 million a year. Instead of taking a long winter break, he spent much of December trying to adjust to his new clubs. McIlroy said Tuesday it wasn’t the clubs; his swing was out of sorts.“I’m sure the guy has got a lot on his mind,” McDowell said. “When you start trying to prove things to other people and you stop playing for yourself, it’s a dangerous place to be. … Any player would have did what he’s done with regard to the equipment change. He’s one of the most talented players I’ve ever seen. Once he starts believing in himself, he’ll be back.” But an hour later, he released a statement through his management company that he couldn’t concentrate because of a sore wisdom tooth that needs to come out.“I have been suffering with a sore wisdom tooth, which is due to come out in the near future,” McIlroy said. “It began bothering me again last night, so I relieved it with Advil. It was very painful again this morning, and I was simply unable to concentrate. It was really bothering me and had begun to affect my playing partners.” Told about McIlroy’s statement about the sore wisdom tooth, Els softened his stance, not wanting to judge another player’s pain.“I didn’t see anything, but if he had a toothache, that’s what it is, you know?” Els said. “Hey, it’s tough. If you ask him how he’s feeling now, he’s obviously feeling terrible for what’s happened this morning.”center_img RORY MCILROY WALKED off the 18th green at PGA National last year and shared a big hug with his father after winning the Honda Classic to reach Number 1 in the world for the first time. His departure Friday was nothing like that.Hands in his pockets, he waited short of the green to tell Ernie Els and Mark Wilson that they would have to finish the second round by themselves. McIlroy was 7-over par through eight holes, on his way to another short week, and it was time for him to leave. He walked off the green and kept going, around the golf shops, out to the parking lot and into his car. And just like that, he was gone. The reason behind his abrupt departure remained a subject of debate.“There’s not really much I can say, guys,” McIlroy told three reporters who followed him out to their car. “I’m not in a good place mentally, you know?”They asked three times if there was anything wrong physically, and he said there was not. When asked about his swing, the 23-year-old from Northern Ireland brushed off the question by saying, “Yeah, I really don’t know what’s going on.” Tiger Woods understands better than anyone in golf what it’s like to have every move judged, though for Woods it started not long after he turned pro in 1996.“You’ve just got to … think about it a little bit more before you say something or do something,” Woods said. “It can get out of hand, especially when you get into social media and start tweeting and all those different things that can go wrong. Jokingly saying something doesn’t always come off as saying that, even though the intent was different.” Nike introduced McIlroy with blaring music and a laser show in Abu Dhabi, but it’s been all downhill from there.“Even though my results haven’t revealed it, I really felt like I was rounding a corner,” McIlroy said in his statement. “This is one of my favorite tournaments of the year and I regret having to make the decision to withdraw, but it was one I had to make.”last_img read more

This number marks a 13 percent increase from 2010.“Price and convenience continue to be the critical value drivers for e-commerce, and unless those conditions change we can expect to see more channel-shifting to online in 2012 and perhaps even an acceleration in the current growth trend,” says comScore chairman Gian Fulgoni in a prepared statement. first_img Post a comment “We want it,” Rothenpieler said. But he notes the biggest hurdle is convincing the company “in terms of how it can be electrified. … We’ll need a change toward e-mobility.””We’re also looking at volumes,” notes Bram Schot, Audi’s chairman of the board of management. After all, the TT is one of the company’s slowest-selling models. In the US alone, Audi moved just 1,289 examples of the TT in 2018 — roughly 1,000 fewer than in 2017.Audi is still planning a number of sporty models in its electrification plans. The upcoming E-Tron GT, which will go intro production in 2020, is “the first step in this direction,” Rothenpieler said. “We’re going to see what we’ll need in terms of internal combustion engines and what we can transform into e-mobility.””Audi will always have icon cars,” Schot added on the topic of the E-Tron GT. “It will be one.” Electrification is a pillar of the future of Audi. The company recently announced it will debut 30 electrified vehicles — plug-in hybrids and full EVs — by 2025. Audi has also said it plans to offer electrification on every one of its model lines. But where does that leave the company’s sports cars — specifically, the slow-selling TT?”It’s part of our DNA,” Hans-Joachim Rothenpieler, member of the board of management for technical development at Audi AG, said to members of the media at an event in Ingolstadt, Germany, on Thursday. “We are fighting for it.”The company has yet to confirm plans for a fourth-gen TT, but Audi says its stronger focus on electrification will dictate the future of this model. first_imgExpressing their solidarity with Bangladesh over the Rohingya issue, lawmakers from the Commonwealth countries on Sunday stressed the need for resolving the crisis. They also proposed adopting a resolution over the Rohingya issue in the general assembly of the 63rd Commonwealth Parliamentary Conference (CPC) being held in Dhaka. At a briefing of Bangladesh foreign minister AH Mahmood Ali on the Rohingya issue at Bangabandhu International Conference Centre in the city, some lawmakers, including a Canadian MP, described the persecution of Rohingyas as ‘genocide’.The foreign minister briefed the delegates of the Commonwealth countries who are participating in the 63rd CPC, the CPA’s annual conference, on the manmade disaster.Following their proposal at the briefing, chairperson of the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association (CPA) Executive Committee Shirin Sharmin Chaudhury said the CPA will seriously consider adopting a resolution over the ongoing Rohingya crisis in the general assembly of the conference. The CPA chief chaired the briefing moderated by its secretary general Akbar Khan.Taking the floor, British House of Lords lawmaker George Foulkes termed ‘genocide’ the persecution of Rohingyas in Rakhine State of Myanmar.“It’ll be intolerable, it’ll be impossible if we leave Bangladesh without passing a resolution on the issue on Tuesday (the day the general assembly will be held),” he said. The participants supported his proposal with big claps. The UK lawmaker said the whole British delegation will ask the conference to visit Cox’s Bazar to see on the ground the exact situation of the Rohingyas. “It’s genocide and there’s is no doubt about it,” he added.Malta speaker Angelo Farrugia first placed the proposal to adopt a resolution on the issue terming it a great humanitarian crisis. The participants also welcomed the proposal giving a big hand.Margaret Quirk, member of the Western Australian Legislative Assembly, wanted to know the stance of India and China over the Rohingya issue. In reply, foreign minister Mahmood Ali said Indian external affairs minister Sushma Swaraj during her recent Dhaka visit conveyed India’s solidarity with Bangladesh. “They are with us.”About China, he said, China sent aid assistance for the Rohingya people who entered Bangladesh fleeing persecution in Rakhine. “Their language is different. But they have also generally agreed with the idea in the (UN) Security Council,” he said.Replying to another query on how many Rohingyas are still in Rakhine, the Foreign Minister said it is difficult to say. “Some 1.1 million Rohingyas have so far entered Bangladesh. They arrived here before and after August 25,” he said, adding that few hundred thousand may be left behind.Canada MP Salma Ataullahjan said Canada had an emergency debate and decided to call it ‘genocide as it is’. Bangladesh has one million refugees, that is why Canada committed 25 million dollar as the first step to help the Rohingyas and work with Bangladesh government.“Canada is a very much humanitarian country. If they have refugee designation, perhaps we can be part of the solution,” she added.Pakistan MP Nafisa Shah said Pakistani parliaments-both Senate and national assembly-passed resolutions showing extreme concern on the Rohingya issue.“We also read out support to Bangladesh. We’re empathised with Bangladesh in this difficult hour. We also completely stand with Bangladesh’s position that it is the government of Myanmar which has to take back the Rohingyas, give them citizenship and place them on equal status with other citizens,” she said.Wales lawmaker Mohammad Asghar proposed reaching a consensus to condemn the Myanmar government.Expressing solidarity with Bangladesh’s position on the Rohongya issue, a Cameron lawmaker said, “We’re united with you as a country and as a nation.”Concluding the briefing, the CPA chairperson said the proposal for adopting a resolution from the CPA will be considered very seriously.”She said Bangladesh also needs the support of the Commonwealth parliaments and Commonwealth governments to a proposal placed before the United Nations Security Council.Shirin said the Commonwealth parliamentarians can also adopt resolutions in their own parliaments on the Rohingya crisis. In the briefing, the foreign minister urged the parliamentarians to play a role in their own governments so that they would be co-sponsors of the proposal placed for the UN Security Council’s 3rd committee meeting scheduled to be held on November 16 next. Some 500 lawmakers from 114 provincial and national parliaments of 44 Commonwealth countries are participating in the eight-day CPA conference that began on 1 November.last_img read more

During a joint press conference with President Muhammadu Buhari on Monday Trump said the US will not accept the attacks on Christian communities in Nigeria In a statement issued on Tuesday Ishaq Akintola director MURIC said Trump’s statement “is prejudiced parochial and unpresidential” Akintola also claimed Trump “is luring Nigerian Christians into bolder confrontation” with Muslims “It is sheer interference in the internal affairs of a sovereign nation Trump has a bully’s instinct” the statement read in part “If this is the same Trump who called African countries ‘shithole’ the same American president who threatened to wipe out North Korea the same US leader who banned Muslims from entering his country the same Republican who said “Torture works ok folks” Nigerians must be wary of America’s involvement in their affairs “We should remember that Nigeria did not get the required support from the moderate and cool-headed Barrack Obama in its war against terrorism We should therefore not expect any from Trump who treats vulnerable nations with contempt and has no respect for African countries Unless Nigerians unite this country will become America’s ‘shithole’ “Trump’s comment on killings in Nigeria implies that he would prefer that it is Muslims alone who are being killed We refuse to believe that a whole American president does not know the true situation on ground in this country He who knows but pretends not to know has his own secret agenda Nigerian Muslims are not intimidated by Trump’s comment We only sympathise with those who will be gullible enough to become Trump’s ‘suckers’ Posterity will judge us “Nigerian Christians should not allow themselves to be deceived by Trump’s comment The advanced countries of today will not compromise the secret of their technological advancement Western countries will not teach us what will benefit our people They will only teach us what will divide us in order to further render us debilitated impoverished and helpless “Nay they will give us fish but refuse to teach us how to fish They will scatter us like wild oats and then give us weapons to kill ourselves Then under the guise of rendering humanitarian services they will take over our land our oil our rich culture and force homosexualism and lesbianism down our throats but at that time it will be too late to resist Mark our words “Trump is only using religion to turn Nigeria into another Iraq Just as former US President Bush used Sunni-Shiite dichotomy to destroy Iraq just to lay his hands on Iraq’s oil field Trump is also eyeing Nigeria’s oil His plan is to use Christian-Muslim divide to set Nigeria ablaze But Nigerians should remember that decades after the invasion of Iraq that country is yet to experience stability Years after the killing of Ghadaffi Libya is yet to find its feet The guns are still booming in Syria and the world holds its breadth each time North Korea sneezes “It is our contention that Trump is luring Nigerian Christians into bolder confrontation with their Muslim neighbours We warn that the West African sub-region will be shaken to its foundation if Nigerian Christians swallow Trump’s bait The extension to Nigeria of America’s crusade which brought ruins to Iraq Syria Afghanistan Libya and Sudan will have dire consequences on the whole African continent” William Brinkman testifies before a Congressional committee earlier this year D Malakoff/Science More change is in store atop the Department of Energy (DOE) On 15 March William Brinkman head of DOE’s Office of Science announced that he will resign his post on 12 April Brinkman says he decided to leave DOE for personal reasons "My wife and I have plans on what we’d like to do that we’ve put off for 4 years" Brinkman says Most immediately Brinkman says he plans to spend part of the summer working with his wife to restore their summer home in Loveladies New Jersey which was damaged in Superstorm Sandy The Obama administration has yet to announce Brinkman’s successor who must be confirmed by the Senate Brinkman joined DOE in June 2009 Prior to taking command of the Office of Science Brinkman was a senior research physicist at Princeton University Before that Brinkman worked at Bell Laboratories where he served as the head of the physics research division and later as vice president of research In a 15 March e-mail to DOE staff members (see below) Brinkman detailed a number the Office of Science’s achievements in recent years including the establishment of DOE’s 46 Energy Frontier Research Centers which were selected in 2009 to push the research boundaries on clean energy topics such as solar power electricity storage carbon sequestration and nuclear power At the same time Brinkman made it clear that Washington’s budget battles are beginning to take their toll on the nation’s R&D "As I leave office my biggest concern remains the erosion of science funding in the United States when most of the industrialized countries of the world are increasing funding" he wrote In a testimony before the US House of Representatives Subcommittee on Energy and Water Development and Related Agencies on 5 March Brinkman expanded on his concerns noting that the recently enacted across-the-board cuts known as the sequester will mean cuts of $215 million for the Office of Science Those cuts he said will force cancellation of the FastForward initiative designed to accelerate progress toward the next generation of supercomputers; elimination of up to 60 graduate student awards at universities; a delay of planned upgrades at the Linac Coherent Light Source in California; cancellation of three funding calls in the biological and environmental research program; and a likely slowdown of the delivery of hardware slated for ITER the international fusion reactor "Sequestration greatly endangers the scope of our scientific program as well as our ability to keep our construction projects on time and on budget" Brinkman concluded Mark Ratner a materials chemist at Northwestern University in Evanston Illinois and a member of DOE’s Basic Energy Sciences Advisory Committee says that Brinkman’s leadership will be missed "Bill brought insight creativity hard work and a stellar history as a physicist to the Office of Science" Ratner writes in an e-mail "He has led the Office with brilliance and with creativity The sequester has made the job more difficult since it was designed to be irrational (and not to be implemented)" News of Brinkman’s departure brought a wistful reaction from some staff members on Capitol Hill who dealt with him regularly He had earned a reputation as a trustworthy and down-to-earth advocate for DOE’s science programs But he also became known for his soft-spoken demeanor; during hearings lawmakers routinely had to remind Brinkman to speak up or get closer to the microphone so that they could understand what he was saying The exchanges even earned him a moniker form one science lobbyist: "Dr Mumbles" Brinkman says that he’s open to returning to Princeton University or the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia where he and his wife intend to move after leaving Washington Here is the full text of Brinkman’s farewell e-mail: From: SCCAST Sent: Friday March 15 2013 11:39 AM Subject: Moving On It’s time for me to move on Now that the new DOE leadership team is taking shape I am writing to let you know I will be moving on My last day at DOE will be Friday April 12 Between now and then I will be transitioning and taking some personal time and will be away from the office much of the time between March 22 and April 12 As I leave office my biggest concern remains the erosion of science funding in the United States when most of the industrialized countries of the world are increasing funding When I came to DOE I started with a principle that I have used when I changed positions in the past namely that I should assume that all the people in my organization are good at their jobs There is no question that the staff in SC has lived up to that initial expectation We have made some changes but overall I believe SC is a very sound organization today So what did we accomplish Actually a lot Many new exciting scientific advances have occurred: the first X-ray FEL the Higgs particle was discovered strongly enhanced use of simulation in materials science discovery of new aspects of the nature of the quark-gluon plasma and a host of new results on possible energy technologies have been discovered to mention just a few ITER has a new leadership team in place and construction is well on its way Overall our international collaborations have increased and we have sharpened our focus on making these strategically important Probably the largest changes have occurred in our approach to science relevant to energy technologies The Energy Frontier Research Centers two hubs and the biofuels centers are established and are working effectively I believe we have made considerable progress in getting our climate program integrated into the broader US government effort and I look forward to the next IPCC report in which our modeling will surely play a major role We have established "tech teams" to coordinate applied and basic science activities in technology areas important to the DOE energy mission that I believe will continue to have an important role as they already have in fostering funding opportunity announcements that are collaborative among the applied and basic science offices On the lab management side much has changed We have a new strong leadership team in place that is making many changes The processing of grants through our Chicago office has been greatly improved and is much more user friendly than in the past the organization at Oak Ridge has been moved forward more toward what we expect of a service center and several new site office leaders have been appointed It continues to be important to exploit modern communications and data systems to improve operational effectiveness and we are on a path to consolidate IT functions as an important element of this strategy I congratulate the PAMS team for the dedication and leadership they have shown in making PAMS a reality In our internal SC headquarters organization we have recruited new leadership for and have greatly improved our public relations and human resources organizations The national laboratories have grown stronger over the last four years The multipurpose labs are not only doing excellent science but also are broadening their impact on the country through increasing coupling to American industry and greater involvement in national security We continue to manage these laboratories through our annual strategic plan reviews and the grading system which has received praise from within the Department and in external reviews We have made careful judgments on whether to renew or compete lab contracts and have been successful in a number of cases I look forward to interacting with many of you as a function of time and wish the entire organization and all of DOE great success Sincerely Dr W F Brinkman Director Office of Science Mumbai:Declaring himself fully fit after recovering from a thigh muscle strain India’s number one male shuttler Kidambi Srikanth said on Saturday slowly started to push and gradually improved on fitness but overall the (self) belief is what has made a huge difference" he said when asked what was the key to his outstanding performance this year He stayed clear of controversy over the cramped scheduling of events that was recently criticised by India’s national coach Pullela Gopichand "The tournaments have increased but at the end of it I don’t want to comment as its a BWF (Badminton World Federation) decision and I don’t want to get into any controversy" he said He also said he would start practising the new serve to be made mandatory
