Commander of the Air Force, Air Marshal Kolitha Gunatilleke has been appointed as the new Chief of Defence Staff, the Air Force media unit said.

first_imgBridon, the global technology company in the manufacture of steel wire and fibre rope solutions for the world’s most demanding applications and a market leader in deep shaft mining hoist rope manufacture, has installed a revolutionary hybrid core rope at a South African gold mine. The New Product Development (NPD) team at Bridon Technology Centre (BTC), which is based in Doncaster in the UK, has developed and produced the Bristar hybrid core rope solution “which in the future may enable Bridon to create longer, stronger and lighter ropes in response to the mining industry’s requirements.”The underground mining industry is trending to deep and ultra-deep depths, typically greater than 2,000 m. “Providing steel ropes for deeper waters and deep mining shafts is a complex exercise, as the longer the rope, the heavier it gets – limiting the depth to which a conventional steel rope can be utilised. Using fibre ropes as a substitute for steel ropes is an attractive solution but a number of challenges still remain with regards to robustness, handling in service and established discard criteria.”Developing the hybrid solution offers the advantage of combining the robustness of steel and weight saving properties of fibre. As modern fibres are as strong as steel but significantly lighter and more flexible, replacing some of the rope’s steel components with fibre makes perfect sense. Following comprehensive internal testing, a trial 42 mm triangular 6-strand rope with a hybrid fibre core has now been successfully manufactured and installed at a gold mine in South Africa.Lee Bailey, Bridon’s Regional Sales Manager in Africa, whose clients in the mining sector regularly experience difficulties in reaching deeper depths, said: “No one else in the industry has been able to replicate this. Hybrid ropes are a real plus for our mining customers as they offer so many advantages over traditional steel ropes.“In a conventional fibre core rope, the fibre centre is there only to support the outer strand of the rope and offers no additional strength. Utilising a Bristar hybrid core contributes additional breaking load to the rope and therefore reduces the overall stresses in the steel wires whilst the rope is in service. The major benefits of a Bristar hybrid core over a conventional fibre core rope include: even load distribution, equalised strand gaps and controlled strand positioning, improved diameter stability and reduced elongation which ultimately equates to increased service life. Our hybrid rope is set to revolutionise the industry. There are so many benefits to the new hybrid core and our customers will in the future have the option to increase payloads at their mines and thus increase productivity, or maintain existing payloads and achieve significantly higher working lives on their ropes.”last_img read more

first_imgFaulty breast implants lead to €60 million payout to 20,000 women The implants were found to contain substandard silicone gel. By AFP A FRENCH COURT has ordered German safety certifier TUV to pay €60 million ($64 million) in compensation to 20,000 women who received defective breast implants that the group had approved. The German company was ordered to make a provisional payment of €3,000 to each plaintiff for certifying that implants made by French firm Poly Implant Prothese (PIP) met safety standards. In what became a major health scandal, the devices were later found to contain substandard, industrial-grade silicone gel.“The final amount will be determined after an assessment, but (TUV) is required to make a provisional payment of €3,000″ per person, said lawyer Laurent Gaudon, representing 7,000 women.TUV said it would appeal the latest ruling, issued by a commercial court in the southern port of Toulon.LiableTUV was found liable in 2013 in a first case brought by 1,700 PIP implant recipients and a group of distributors. But an appeals court later overturned that decision, saying that TUV had fulfilled its obligations as a certifying body and could not be held responsible for failing to detect PIP’s cover-up.The company maintains it was never its job to check the actual implants, and their task was only to inspect the manufacturing process. The scandal first erupted in 2010 after doctors noticed abnormally high rupture rates in the implants. The affair made global headlines in 2011, with some 300,000 women in 65 countries believed to have received the faulty implants.PIP’s founder, Jean-Claude Mas, was convicted of fraud and sentenced to four years in jail in 2013, confirmed on appeal in 2016.He always denied the implants posed any health risks.Thousands of women have had the implants removed, despite health officials in several countries saying they are not toxic and are not thought to increase the risk of breast cancer.Irish casesA number of Irish women have taken cases in Ireland against PIP.Three Irish clinics implant women with the PIP implants: Harley Medical Group, which dealt with 1,100 women; Clane Hospital Cosmetic Surgery which dealt with 250 women; and Shandon St Hospital which dealt with 100 women. In 2012, the Department of Health said it would cover removal costs for the women that attended the Harley Medical Group. The other two clinics provided “satisfactory packages” after being told to cover the cost of surgery for the affected women. When the Irish Medical Board heard about the issues with the implants, it contacted all the clinics that used the product and asked them cease using it.In 2013, MEPs agreed on legislation for stricter monitoring and certification procedures for medical devices such as breast or hip implants, in the wake of the PIP scandal. The proposed legislation seeks to improve transparency of information for patients and medical staff and to strengthen traceability rules, without creating additional burdens for innovative small manufacturers.- © AFP, 2017Read: State to cover removal costs after clinic criticised over PIP breast implants> Image: AP/Press Association Images Monday 23 Jan 2017, 9:30 AM A nurse holds defective breast implant manufactured by French company Poly Implant Prothese (PIP), which were removed from a patient by a plastic surgeon. first_img Share133 Tweet Email2 26 Comments By AFP Libira Bar, Haifa Source: TripAdvisorTHERE ARE SO many issues dividing Israelis and Palestinians, but beer may be one of the oddest. The recent decision by a pub in the northern Israeli city of Haifa to make Shepherds beer available has sparked controversy in the country. The problem: Shepherds is a Palestinian beer recently launched by a brewery in the occupied West Bank. The decision by the bar, the Libira, led to drunken-sounding diatribes from some.“Traitors’ bar! I call on everyone not to go there,” read one of the comments on the Facebook page of the pub located at the traditional port in Haifa’s Old City.“This Palestinian beer is made with Jewish blood,” said another. When he saw the insults, co-owner Erik Salarov, said he was shocked.“We don’t do politics”, he said, at the bar that he opened with friends.“We offer a drink with friends. We have highlighted a Scottish beer, a beer from Tel Aviv and Taybeh beer,” he added, naming the most popular Palestinian brew. Source: FacebookFor Salarov, those who call for a boycott of Libira are “a handful of racist nationalists who do not accept the idea of co-existence”.He says such co-existence is a part of life in Haifa, where 10% of residents are Arab Israelis, or the descendants of Palestinians who remained after the creation of Israel in 1948.Salarov says that dynamic is particularly strong in the Old City. Jews and Arabs gather together – rare in Israel – at bars and restaurants in the neighbourhood. He has seen hardliners seek to cause trouble before.“We’ve seen it several times, but they are a minority,” said Salarov. “They are more bark than bite.”‘We are still open’Suheil Assad, an Arab Israeli member of the city council and former deputy mayor, said Haifa has managed to achieve some level of co-existence better than other mixed cities.“Arabs and Jews live mixed in almost all neighbourhoods,” he said.Still, he said, “every right-wing attack causes tensions to rise between Jews and Arabs”.“Twenty years ago, the number of right-wing militants was much less,” he added.Haifa, known in particular for its Baha’i Gardens, is also a cultural centre for Israel’s Arab population. Haifa Source: Shutterstock/maratrThe city’s Krieger Centre for the arts regularly holds concerts featuring Arab music and theatres regularly stage Arabic plays.Jaafar Farah of Arab Israeli rights group Mossawa said sometimes it seems that “Arabs account for 50% of the population instead of only 10%”.But the city’s Arab cultural events have regularly come under attack from the far right. Some called for a boycott of a recent concert by Arab Israeli hip-hop artist Tamer Nafar, whose pioneering political rap group DAM has touched a nerve with songs like “Who’s the Terrorist?”.Al-Midan Theatre’s state subsidies were frozen for a year in 2015 after a similar campaign targeting the play “A Parallel Time”, whose plot bears close resemblance to the life of an Arab-Israeli jailed over the kidnapping and murder of an Israeli soldier.A year before that, then Israeli foreign minister Avigdor Lieberman called for a boycott of Arab Israeli stores because they supported a one-day strike in solidarity with Gazans during the 2014 Gaza war.Like Akko, another mixed city along the coast, Haifa has also seen demonstrations that have degenerated into violence, said Farah.“The far right wants to create clashes to then be able to show that co-existence between Jews and Arabs is impossible,” he said. For Leonid Lipkin, co-owner of Libira, those efforts will fail.“We are resisting and the proof is that we are still open,” he said.© – AFP, 2017Read: Death row inmates file lawsuit to prevent executions of eight men in 10 daysRead: Trump’s climate plan labelled ‘a colossal mistake that defies science’ http://jrnl.ie/3312414 13,542 Views Decision to stock Palestinian beer causes uproar in northern Israel city Libira Bar in the city of Haifa found itself at the centre of a storm after recently choosing to stock the Palestinian beer Shepherds. first_imgThe ministry of women and child development is likely to get an increased allocation of funds in Budget 2017. The increased allotment will be used to universalise the maternity benefits scheme for families living below the poverty line. The government is likely to increase the allocation for the WCD ministry by 20 percent as compared to last year, according to reports. Finance Minister Arun Jaitley will present the BJP government’s third Union Budget on February 1, a month before it has been done in the previous years. The maternity benefits programme aims to provide better healthcare facilities to pregnant women, including free nutrition advice and health check-ups, officials said, according to PTI. The scheme currently includes women in “high burden” districts, which are identified on the basis of the backwardness of the location and lack of basic amenities. With the increased budget allocation, the scheme is likely to be universalised for all BPL families.Quality pre-natal and post-natal care continues to provide challenges to the government. India accounts for 17 percent of deaths occurring globally during childbirth. Almost 45,000 mothers die due to causes related to childbirth every year in India, and a woman dies every five minutes during pregnancy and childbirth in the country, according to the World Health Organization (WHO).The Indian government’s Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY), a conditional maternity benefit scheme launched in 2010, provides cash incentives for improved health and nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers to partly compensate for wage loss suffered by them both prior to and after delivery of the child. Pregnant women of 19 years of age and above are entitled, for the first two livebirths, to benefits under the scheme. In 2016, the WCD ministry received a total allocation of Rs. 17,408 crore, which is likely to get a hike in the upcoming budget. With the reinforced funding, the government will also be better able to implement its various schemes for women and child development, such as Beti bachao beti padhao; Ujjawala that aims at prevention of trafficking and rehabilitation and re-integration of victims of commercial sexual exploitation; and women helpline scheme.last_img read more

first_img Citation: Komaba Group reports sodium ion battery progress (2012, September 28) retrieved 18 August 2019 from https://phys.org/news/2012-09-komaba-group-sodium-ion-battery.html Video: Diginfo.tv “Actually, we’ve spent about seven years researching sodium ion batteries. We’ve gained a lot of know-how regarding electrolytes and cells for such batteries. We have all the reagents needed right here,” he said.”Sodium ion batteries can be made using iron, aluminum, and sodium, rather than cobalt or copper as before,” added Prof. Komaba. “What’s more, our results show that battery capacity can be increased simply by using carbon made from sugar as the anode. So high-performance batteries like expensive lithium batteries, which are an important type of rechargeable battery, may be achievable. “They are using hard carbon obtained by pyrolyzing sucrose, the main constituent of sugar. Before it can be used as the anode in a sodium-ion battery, the sugar is turned into black, hard carbon powder by heating it in an oxygen-free oven, hot enough to produce a hard black carbon powder. The team has achieved a storage capacity of 300 mAh, which is 20 percent higher than that of conventional hard carbon.Komaba anticipates it may take about five years to achieve a practical version, but the group is confident that this is possible. They have said that with improvements in technology and performance, it is reasonable to expect batteries that can replace lithium ion batteries with lower-priced materials that are abundant, not scarce. Other researchers beyond Japan are also interested in seeing to what extent they can progress using sodium ion technologies to the point where sodium ion batteries can be commercialized. Argonne National Laboratory has been exploring sodium ion batteries as an alternative to lithium. Aquion Energy creates batteries that can operate at a wide range of temperatures and use sodium ions rather than lithium ions. The company has a production plant in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, and plans to create a high-volume production facility in the future. Sodium-based batteries are seen as an attractive path to follow as a cheap and nontoxic alternative. More information: phys.org/news/2012-02-nanostru … m-ion-batteries.htmlvia Diginfo.tv © 2012 Phys.org (Phys.org)—Scientists with a common goal, to figure out an alternative to the lithium ion battery, the main power source of choice, are not giving up. The quarrel is not with the lithium ion battery’s performance but in its high price and looming scarcity. The objective is to be able to offer a realistic alternative to lithium ion batteries for energy storage. Numerous recipes are coming out of labs as research efforts continue. The latest team to make news in this effort is from Japan, which relies on imports for its entire supply of the rare metal lithium. The news-makers are a research group at the Tokyo University of Science, led by Associate Professor Shinichi Komaba. They have confirmed they are making progress with their focus on sodium ion batteries as a li-ion alternative. They are developing the positive and negative electrode materials for sodium-ion batteries using sodium ions as the cathode and carbon from ordinary sugar for the anode. first_img Although many surveys of molecular gas emission from galaxies have been performed to date, only few studies have been carried out on the physical conditions of molecular gas, especially carbon monoxide (CO), in elliptical galaxies. This could be due to the overall weakness of the molecular emission in such galaxies and small apparent size of these structures. The currently small number of such studies and high demand for that kind of observations motivated a group of astronomers led by Baltasar Vila-Vilaró of the ALMA Observatory in Chile to investigate the galaxy NGC 3557. Located some 130 million light years away from the Earth, NGC 3557 is a southern-sky elliptical galaxy and a member of a small group of galaxies. It was classified as a flat-spectrum radio galaxy with a jet that bends at distances of a few arcmin from the center.Vila-Vilaró’s team chose NGC 3557 due to its relative proximity and CO-brightness, which facilitates the study of its molecular structures in detail. Moreover, NGC 3557 is assumed to be in a stage where little current star formation may be happening, hence astronomers perceive it as an important representative of the molecular gas structures to be expected in post-star formation scenarios.”As part of the ALMA program 2015.1.00591.S (P.I.: Baltasar Vila-Vilaró), we observed the southern elliptical galaxy NGC 3557 in the 12CO(1–0) line (ALMA Band 3),” the researchers wrote in the paper.According to the study, the astronomers detected the CO(1-0) emission line, and a relatively strong continuum at 3mm exhibiting flat-spectrum central unresolved source and two jets associated with the larger scale emission observed at lower frequencies. They added that the molecular gas appears to be concentrated within the inner 815 light years of the galaxy, near the location of the unresolved flat-spectrum source. The authors of the paper found that the total integrated CO(1-0) flux is 4.5 Jy km/s, which indicates a molecular hydrogen mass of about 90 million solar masses or a total molecular gas mass including helium of approximately 122 million solar masses. They noted that these values differ quite significantly from those reported in similar previous study of NGC 3557 conducted in 2010.Furthermore, the average value of the integrated intensity line ratio CO(2-1)/CO(1-0) was found to be 0.7. This value in NGC 3557 is relatively high when compared with values reported in other elliptical galaxies observed with single-dish telescopes and could be related to the interaction of the molecular gas with the radio jet plasma. The researchers have also investigated the kinematics of the molecular gas in NGC 3557 and found that it has some organized rotation with the same orientation as the nuclear dust absorption detected with the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). first_imgArtificial Intelligence has been climbing on the success of playing difficult classic board games like Chess and Go to complex multiplayer online games like DOTA 2 and StarCraft. Last month, Google DeepMind’s AI AlphaStar defeated StarCraft II pros. Unity also launched an ‘Obstacle Tower Challenge’ to test AI game players. In a similar move, yesterday Allen Institute for Artificial Intelligence released Iconary an AI Pictionary game which allows you to collaborate with an Artificial Intelligence software. It’s not a man vs machine but more of a man and machine collaborative game. Per the researchers behind this game, “Iconary is a breakthrough AI game in that it is the first Common Sense AI game involving language, vision, interpretation and reasoning.” Gameplay Iconary offers players a limited set of icons along with a phrase describing a situation. Players need to use the icon set to compose a scene that represents the phrase and the AllenAI will try to guess it correctly. It can also update its compositions based on its human partner’s guesses to help successfully guide them towards the correct phrase. The AI plays both on the drawing side and guessing side. For guessing, the Artificial Intelligence arranges icons and the players have to guess the phrase. There are over 75,000 phrases supported in Iconary, with more being added regularly. However, the astonishing thing is that there are uncountable ways of representing them. This is challenging for an AI system, according to researcher Ani Kembhavi, “because it tests a wide range of common sense skills. The algorithms must first identify the visual elements in the picture, figure out how they relate to one another, and then translate that scene into simple language that humans can understand. This is why Pictionary could teach computers information that other AI benchmarks like Go and StarCraft can’t” The main goal of Iconary is to help AI systems come to an understanding of what humans are asking of it. This will help in overcoming multiple roadblocks in simple tasks by having humans and AI understand complex phrases. The researchers write, “AllenAI has never before encountered the unique phrases in Iconary, yet our preliminary games have shown that our AI system is able to both successfully depict and understand phrases with a human partner with an often surprising deftness and nuance.” You may give Iconary a try at iconary.allenai.org. first_img Top Stories In terms of trying to do what’s best for the actual football team, Arians and the Cardinals did nothing wrong. They did not sit a healthy receiver so Brown could be active, so no harm there. They left Cleveland with a 34-20 win, rookie J.J. Nelson caught three passes for 70 yards, and Brown did not have to risk making a nagging injury even worse.Any reasonable football fan would understand that. Unfortunately, there are many fans who do not fit into that category, and they made it known the best way they know how: through the wonderful world of Twitter. Grace expects Greinke trade to have emotional impact Fantasy owners who had Brown in their lineups got a big fat zero from one of the game’s more productive receivers, and may have lost a crucial game because of it.Cardinals coach Bruce Arians has a message for anyone who fits that category.“Tough s***.”Agreed.For the record, allow me to state that yours truly had Brown in one of his lineups (and before you start wondering about inside information trust me, my job does not help on the fantasy football gridiron) and while I did not lose that game because of his goose egg, it certainly did not help things. But Brown not playing does help the Cardinals, as he’ll have extra time to rest up and heal before a crucial Week 10 showdown in Seattle. And that’s really all Arians should care about. It’s also worth noting that Arians did not make Brown active just to mess with people. If necessary, the coach said the second-year pro could have played.“In case of injury, he could have given us more — as Jerraud Powers could have — than anybody else who was inactive,” he said. “And they were both, they’re smart enough to get through that game and play whatever they had to play without injuring themselves worse.” Anything else boss??? https://t.co/ZagFq3f9LT— Smokey Brown (@Jwalk_back12) November 1, 2015 Arizona Cardinals wide receiver John Brown (12) celebrates his touchdown against the San Diego Chargers with fans during the first half of an NFL preseason football game, Saturday, Aug. 22, 2015, in Glendale, Ariz. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) No. Have to leave teams thinking https://t.co/CkHAiQSkmF— Smokey Brown (@Jwalk_back12) November 1, 2015There’s plenty more, and some of it’s worse. All of it’s dumb.To anyone who tweeted Brown, my question would be what are you actually hoping to accomplish? Are you expecting an apology? Maybe a signed football? You will be getting neither. The fact of the matter is, as Deadspin so eloquently wrote, John Brown and the Cardinals despise your fantasy team. OK, maybe they don’t actually despise it. But they certainly do not care about your team, and nor should they. 0 Comments   Share   center_img That’s your job; theirs is to win football games. And if the Cardinals doing their job made it so you couldn’t do yours, then, well, I think Arians said it best.Tough s***. – / 18 Anyone who says fantasy football is stupid or dumb does not understand.A billion dollar industry, over time it has become almost as popular — and for some people, probably even more so — than the game of football itself. There’s little doubt that without fantasy football, the NFL is not nearly as popular as it is.So, it’s understandable for someone who partakes in the game to be miffed or upset when something does not go their way, especially if they leave feeling like they were misled or wronged in some way. Like, for instance, Sunday’s game between the Arizona Cardinals and Cleveland Browns, one in which a previously declared “questionable” John Brown was active for the game only to not see a single snap. 😊 you welcome https://t.co/QXMBeyqD53— Smokey Brown (@Jwalk_back12) November 1, 2015 The 5: Takeaways from the Coyotes’ introduction of Alex Meruelo Former Cardinals kicker Phil Dawson retires Derrick Hall satisfied with D-backs’ buying and sellinglast_img read more

Why? It turns out Cipher blackmailed Dom into working for her by threatening to kill the son he never knew he had So how did Dom get out of this bind By teaming up with his nemesis and using a very special necklace Confused Let us explain: When were Dom and Elena together Way back in the fourth Fast film Fast & Furious Dom’s childhood sweetheart Letty appeared to die in a car explosion In Fast Five Dom moved on and romanced Brazilian cop Elena (Elsa Pataky) The two were living a peaceful explosion-free life together in Spain at the beginning of Fast & Furious 6 But Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) agent Luke Hobbs (Dwayne ‘The Rock’ Johnson) tracked them down and told them that Letty was still alive She apparently lost her memory and joined a group of terrorists led by Owen Shaw (Luke Evans) Elena being an incredibly understanding person eventually tells Dom to go save Letty which he does MORE 10 Fate of the Furious Plot Holes That Only Make the Movie Better When did Elena get pregnant Elena tells Dom in Fate of the Furious that she found out she was pregnant right before Letty returned That means she probably knew she was pregnant at the end of Fast & Furious 6 and through Furious 7 Elena appeared twice during those films First at the end of Fast & Furious 6 when she tells Letty no hard feelings she can have Dom She’s back in the beginning of Furious 7 when Shaw’s brother Deckard Shaw (Jason Statham) attacks DSS headquarters Deckard blows up Hobbs’ office and Hobbs saves Elena by grabbing her as they are launched out of a window That means that Elena was pregnant when she flew out of a building and landed on a car which could not have been great for the baby Mere details… Dom didn’t know Elena says she planned on telling him about the baby after he and Letty got back from their honeymoon in Cuba Seems odd since the baby looks to be well over a year old when we finally see him Also she hasn’t named him for an entire year Again odd not to mention impractical Charlize Theron in The Fate of the Furious Matt Kennedy—Universal Pictures/AP Cipher turns out to be the ultimate Fast & Furious baddie They’re the Russian nesting dolls of villains Let’s work backwards: Cipher has multiple terrorists including Jakande (Djimon Hounsou) from Furious 7 and Owen Shaw from Fast & Furious 6 on her payroll Shaw was also the boss of the drug lord Braga (John Ortiz) the man who ordered Letty to be killed in Fast & Furious And it was Owen’s death that led Deckard to wreak havoc on the crew in Furious 7 So basically Cipher is responsible for all of the bad things that have happened to the Fast family in the last five films If you had any doubt that she’s really bad she kills Elena just because Dom was flirting with his own wife Talk about cold MORE How The Fate of the Furious Handles Paul Walker’s Death Charlize Theron and Vin Diesel in The Fate of the Furious Matt Kennedy—AP Dom calls on another family for help The Shaw family doesn’t love Cipher: She recruited Owen Shaw to her team and then left him for dead in a hospital when Dom threw him off a plane in Fast & Furious 6 Dom figures this out after Cipher tells Deckard he chose the wrong team when she breaks into the crew’s super-secret headquarters and gives them all wicked concussions Dom somehow manages to reach out to the Shaw brothers’ mother (Helen Mirren who we hope will get behind the wheel of a car in Fast & Furious 9) He then pretends to kill Deckard Shaw’s mother is waiting for him in the ambulance to devise a plan to take down Cipher and save Dom’s baby while Dom is busy stealing nukes in Russia While it’s great that Owen and Deckard saved Dom’s baby let’s not forget that the brothers are responsible for the deaths of Dom’s friends Gisele (Gal Gadot) and Han (Sung Kang) in Fast & Furious 6 In fact the plot of Furious 7 centered around the gang tracking down Deckard to kill him and avenge Han’s death Considering all the trouble he went to in the last movie Dom seemed to forget all of that pretty quickly when he decided to team up with the Shaw brothers this time around How did Deckard fake his death Leo (Tego Calderon) and Santos (Don Omar) are two members of Dom’s crew from Fast & Furious and Fast Five They bicker while they pull recon jobslike clogging up the toilets in a police station so they can masquerade as janitors to infiltrate it At the end of Fate of the Furious we see them gambling their millions in Monaco They weren’t in the last two Fast films but return for a brief cameo in Fate as two fake ambulance drivers who move Deckard’s “dead” body MORE We Ranked Every Possible Detail of the Fast & Furious Movies How is Deckard able to track Cipher’s plane If that cross necklace looked familiar it’s because it’s been kicking around the Fast franchies for years Dom gave it to Letty before she “died” and started wearing it again in her memory It fell off during a fight in Fast Five and Elena picked it up and started wearing it around (which is sort of weird) Dom got it back from her and gave it to Letty to try to help her regain her memory in Fast & Furious 6 She in turn gave it to Owen Shaw to prove she didn’t care about Dom Later Deckard Shaw dropped it at the site of Han’s murder as a sort of threat to Dom Dom retrieves it when he visits Tokyo to bring Han’s body home And now besides sentimental value it apparently has a super-powerful tracking device implanted inside This clever move leads Shaw to Dom’s son’s location setting up the delightful scene in which he kicks bad guys’ butts while carrying a baby Write to Eliana Dockterman at elianadockterman@timecomIDEAS Bates is the founder of The Everyday Sexism Project and the author of Everyday Sexism As Donald Trump boycotts Thursday night’s Fox News Republican debate news sites are awash with speculation about his reasons for pulling out Headlines have referred to "the Donald Trump – Megyn Kelly feud" TV shows are debating "why Donald Trump and Megyn Kelly are currently quibbling" and the situation has been described as a "spat" and a "drama" These characterizations suggest a two-sided war of words with escalation and attacks from both parties The reality couldnt be more different Trumps animosity towards Kelly first arose when she challenged him over his misogynistic comments about women at the first Republican primary debate in August saying: "Youve called women you dont like fat pigs dogs slobs and disgusting animals" and asking: "Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president" It was a tough question but one well within the realm of relevance especially as Kelly pointed out in the context of Hillary Clintons candidacy Since then Trump has repeatedly childishly and abusively taunted Kelly making high-profile public comments about her professionalism and performance retweeting sexist and critical tweets about her and repeatedly reviving the issue Asked about Kelly on CNN after the August debate Trump said: "you could see there was blood coming out of her eyes blood coming out of her wherever" a comment he later denied was a reference to menstruation He has also repeatedly cast aspersions about Kellys journalistic prowess calling her a "lightweight" and saying: "I just dont respect her as a journalist I have no respect for her I dont think shes very good I think shes highly overrated" Later in August Trump launched a fusillade of critical tweets at Kelly during her TV show The Kelly File including a quote from another Twitter user that read: "The bimbo back in town I hope not for long" On another occasion Trump tweeted: "I refuse to call Megyn Kelly a bimbo because that would not be politically correct Instead I will only call her a lightweight reporter" Early Thursday morning Trump followed up with a new line of attack retweeting a pair of images from a photoshoot Kelly did for GQ magazine and the message: "And this is the bimbo thats asking presidential questions" The images were captioned: "Criticizes Trump for objectifying women Poses like this in GQ magazine" In a statement rightly supporting Kelly Fox News claimed that Trumps campaign manager Corey Lewandowski threatened Kelly in a telephone call with a FOX News executive It read: "Lewandowski stated that Megyn had a rough couple of days after that last debate and he would hate to have her go through that again" Trumps behavior isnt doing him any favors with female voters either Countless women are using the #EverydaySexism hashtag the name of my forthcoming book to call out his misogyny describing his attacks on women as "low" "gross" and "ignorant" One asked: "Can we just all agree that anything Trump says is automatically @EverydaySexism" Another wrote: "Megyn Kelly posed for GQ in 2010 Conservatives slut shaming the hell out of her because Trump #everydaysexism” Kelly meanwhile has maintained a dignified and professional composure She has refused to apologize saying "I shall continue doing my job without fear or favor" and has rarely responded to his aggressive tweets This is not a spat a drama a feud or a quibble This is the relentless misogynistic abuse of a high-profile woman doing her job The problem with a woman being attacked in such a way on a national stage is that it tends to have a ripple effect causing her also to experience a range of other sexist repercussions For example while commenting on the issue Doug Gross an Iowa Republican strategist unaffiliated with any particular campaign said: "It’s the only Republican debate in our state and he’s not even going to show up because he’s afraid of a woman reporter What kind of a wimp is this" Trumps chief rival Texas senator Ted Cruz seemed to jump on the same bandwagon albeit more subtly offering to debate Trump one-on-one"If Donald is afraid of Megyn Kelly" The mocking of Trump for being “afraid” of Kelly undermines her professional status by suggesting that a female reporter is a less formidable interviewer than her male peers Other criticisms of Trump similarly dealt Kelly backhanded sexist implications like The View commentator Joy Behars suggestion that: "This is the first gorgeous blonde that he cant wrap around his finger" Meanwhile Trumps sexist attitude towards Kelly has also had a more predictable knock-on effect in spurring many of his more than 58 million Twitter followers to bombard her with misogynistic abuse a phenomenon for which he should take at least some responsibility given his own repeated attacks on her using the platform It has been reported that in the time since Trump announced his withdrawal from the debate his supporters have tweeted the word "bitch" at her 432 times the word "bimbo" 404 "whore" 88 times and "cnt" 34 This is not the standard response that male journalists have to contend with simply for doing their job This is just the most recent high-profile example of the deeply misogynistic abuse double standards and sexist attacks that women in the public eye experience on a daily basis To correlate Kellys question about Trumps misogynistic comments with a completely unrelated photo shoot is to try and suggest that a woman who dares to be photographed or care about her appearance automatically forfeits the right to challenge sexism To ridicule Trump for refusing to enter into a debate with Kelly as moderator is to suggest that female journalists in general and Kelly in particular are lightweight pushoversplaying into Trumps own sexist rhetoric To bombard Kelly with misogynistic online abuse is to admit that there are no logical arguments with which to challenge her as she has acted entirely professionally throughout But perhaps worst of all to characterize this ugly display of misogyny as a “feud” or a “spat” is to hide the real truth This is sexism Nasty cowardly unprofessional sexism It deserves to be seen for exactly what it is Contact us at editors@timecom IDEAS TIME Ideas hosts the
